If you are looking for a small family car that delivers affordability, excellent fuel economy and good specifications in an attractive package, the Mitsubishi Colt 1.3 CZ2 Cleartec 3dr could be the car for you. However, the 1.3-litre engine is underpowered and there have been some reliability issues.

PROS:  The Colt 1.3 CZ2 ClearTec offers excellent fuel economy, low emissions and strong resale values. The cabin is spacious enough for four adults and the controls are clear and well-laid out.

CONS:  The Colt lacks refinement and the boot space is small. The 1.3-litre engine is a bit breathless on the open road.

Behind the Wheel

The Colt’s 1.3 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine is brisk rather than powerful. It delivers 94 bhp at 6,000 rpm, with 92 lb-ft of torque. This translates to a top speed of 112 mph, whilst travelling from 0-62 mph takes 10.4 seconds.

The Colt provides a competent rather than exciting drive. It leans a lot through corners but grips well. The ride quality is very good for such a small car, with imperfections in the road being ironed out by the Colt's suspension. Wind noise is present at speed and the engine makes a lot of noise when pushed.

Looks & Equipment

The Colt 1.3 CZ2 ClearTec has an attractive, if bland, external appearance. The interior is well put together but the plastics look and feel cheap. The Colt comes with alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, stereo and MP3 connectivity as standard.

The car also comes with steering wheel-mounted stereo controls and front fog lights, with metallic paint for the exterior available at an additional cost.

The dash is well-organised with large buttons that are easy to use.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There is plenty of head and leg room for four adults but the boot space is disappointing when the seats are up, offering just 160 litres. However, all models come with split-folding rear seats that boost that capacity to a total of 568 litres of boot space.

While many of its rivals provide six airbags and stability control across their respective ranges, the CZ2 comes with just driver and passenger front airbags - not really good enough. Deadlocks, remote central locking and an immobiliser are standard however.

There are also concerns regarding the reliability of this model. According to the 2011 JD customer satisfaction survey, owners rated its mechanical reliability, as well as exterior and interior quality, as below average but the car does come with a three-year warranty.

Value for Money

The Colt is priced at £10,999 which is reasonable for the equipment on offer but fails to match the specifications of its nearest rivals. The car has low running costs and comes under the low cost road tax band C. Insurance falling under bracket 15 and excellent fuel economy of 55.4 mpg and low carbon emissions of 119 g/km make it cheap to run.

In terms of affordability, it may be best to keep it simple and opt for the basic trim and a 1.1 litre petrol engine. The Colt 1.3 CZ2 ClearTec is a decent car but there are better alternatives around for roughly the same price.
