PROS: Performance credentials are high making this an attractive and powerful car with a good reputation.
CONS: Economic value is sacrificed to accommodate the extra power and this means some families may find it an impractical choice.
The Mini Clubman Cooper S is powered by a four cylinder engine which delivers a maximum power output of 184 bhp at 5500 rpm with torque figures of 177 lb-ft at 1600-5000 rpm. This allows the car to have an impressive top speed of 141 mph whilst acceleration is fairly rapid, reaching 0-62 mph in just 7.5 seconds.
Handling is fairly good, but this car is not as much fun to drive as the Mini Hatch Cooper. Noise from the wind and road is audible but not excessive, plus engine noise is fairly low, so the cabin is not too loud, even when driving at relatively high speeds.
As far as the exterior goes, there is little to fault the Mini Clubman Cooper S 5dr: it is stylish and attractive. On the inside, the dashboard could be arranged a little better and some of the furnishings could be improved upon.
Basic features are fitted as standard but if you want to kit the car out with all the available extras, expect to pay a lot for them.
Standard equipment includes: power steering, central locking, stability control, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows and an advanced stereo system with CD and MP3 connectivity. The air conditioning can be upgraded to more advanced climate control for £235 whilst other options such as cruise control, a built-in sat nav, Bluetooth connectivity, rear parking sensors and leather seats are also available as chargeable extras.
Boot capacity on the Mini Clubman Cooper S 5dr is better than in the Mini Hatch Cooper. The car has 260 litres when the seats are in place, expanding to 930 litres when the seats are folded down.
On top of this, the car also has a very practical three year warranty for unlimited mileage.
In terms of safety, the car performs well and offers a great level of kit; an alarm and immobiliser are fitted as standard. The car also has driver, passenger and front side airbags fitted to increase safety.
At £19,055 this car is a fair price for its size and class – especially when you consider it will hold its resale values well. However, the car is sufficiently higher in price than the Clubman One 5dr and although there are improvements in performance the economic benefits are somewhat reduced, making this model more expensive in the long run.
In terms of efficiency, the car achieves a decent 47.9 mpg making it fairly efficient for its size. Carbon emissions are favourable at 137 g/km, putting the car into road tax band E. Insurance premiums come under group 30.
