The John Cooper Works (JCW) versions of the Mini Cooper are quickly becoming well known as the top performing models in the new Mini range, and the JCW Clubman's pace is combined with an excellent driving experience. This certainly isn't the car for those who are looking for solid fuel efficiency, and despite the Clubman's space advantage over the Hatch, it is still not a practical proposition.

PROS:  The John Cooper Works version of the Clubman offers awesome power and responsiveness, along with the practicality of the standard Clubman.

CONS:  With a high price tag and mediocre fuel efficiency, the JCW Clubman is not a cheap prospect. Standard equipment levels are also disappointing.

Behind the Wheel

The longer wheelbase of the Clubman JCW does compromise performance and handling in comparison with the Hatch, but only slightly. The ride is very smooth, and with the tuned engine this really is a superb car to drive. The driving position for the Clubman is also very good with a comfortable seat being fully adjustable to suit the driver, and visibility is fine to the front and rear.

The performance figures of the Clubman JCW are really quite impressive, with the acceleration from 0-62mph taking only 6.8 seconds. The top speed of 148mph is also more than enough for most drivers, and means that this version of the Clubman has ample power and pace for most journeys, and also offers plenty of fun.

Looks & Equipment

The Clubman JCW comes with a bodykit that makes the look of the car even sportier, but it still retains the lovable Mini front end with its bubble headlights, supplemented by a vent in the bonnet. The colour-coded wing mirrors and contrast roof also look good, and this version of the Clubman also comes with JCW alloy wheels which add to the overall sporty look of the car.

MINI have a reputation for mean levels of standard kit, and though the Clubman JCW does offer air conditioning and a CD stereo, features such as leather seats and satellite navigation are relegated to the optional extras list.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Mini Clubman is a car which has a chassis 80mm longer than the hatchback version, but this certainly doesn't mean that it is spacious in the front and back seats. The boot space is still a little bit too small for those with a lot of luggage, but it will be fine for the majority of people. In terms of reliability, the Mini brand has had an excellent reputation since it was reborn, and the Clubman JCW has only added to that reputation.

In terms of the safety of the car, the Clubman itself hasn't been submitted to the Euro NCAP safety tests yet, but it does include a good range of airbags. It also has a very good range of driver aids which help to keep the car stable and the driver in control at all times.

Value for Money

The Clubman JCW is one of the most expensive Minis currently on the market, and with a list price of £23,305 it would have been nice to see a few more luxuries included as standard.

The powerful engine may deliver fun and pace in buckets, but the fuel efficiency does take a hit with the car only able to achieve an average 39.2mpg. The Clubman JCW falls under insurance group 34 so premiums will be pricey, but the desirability of the car means that it does hold its value quite well. The package is completed with a three year unlimited mileage warranty and roadside breakdown assistance.
