You’ll be hard pressed to find a more fun drive for the cost of this nippy 2-seat roadster. The Mazda MX-5’s excellent reputation for excellent handling and reliability has helped its popularity, and the 2.0i SE has all this whilst still providing sensible running costs and high residual values. The Mazda MX-5 could well be a sensible investment as well as tremendous fun.

PROS:  Pound for pound this 2-seat roadster could be the most fun you can have in a car, and adds outstanding reliability to its competitive price.

CONS:  The revvy 2.0-litre engine can sound a little over-eager, and climate control as standard would have been nice.

Behind the Wheel

The Mazda MX-5 2.0i SE is, like other models in the MX-5 range, a fun car to drive. It feels responsive and involving, as you would expect from a light body and rear-wheel drive layout, only becoming tail-happy when pushed to its limits. It feels well-balanced and has excellent levels of grip. The car feels composed and, despite the low-slung seating, is both comfortable and easy to drive. The car performs very well under braking, feeling sharp and responsive.

Its 16-valve 2.0-litre engine is very revvy, producing 162bhp at 7000rpm, and torque levels of 138 lb-ft at 5000rpm. It propels the car from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds. The car comes as standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox which offers smooth and precise movement through the gears. The Mazda MX-5 2.0i SE can reach a top speed of 132mph.

Looks & Equipment

The latest incarnation of the Mazda MX-5 retains the distinctive smooth and streamlined character synonymous with the model. The first MX-5 was released over 20-years ago, but is a design classic and has clearly served as a source of inspiration for the car up to and including this present model.

It features as standard power steering, dynamic stability control, alloy wheels, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, driver airbag, passenger airbag, front side airbags, CD player, and MP3 connectivity. Climate control is an optional extra. The manual hood is quick and easy to deploy and retract.

The interior has a look and feel of quality about it, and with supportive seats the driving position is excellent, despite a steering wheel with height-only adjustment. It manages to be both stylish and functional, with instruments that are easy to read and a sensibly laid-out centre console adding to the driving experience.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Mazda MX-5 2.0i SE comes as standard with driver airbag, passenger airbag, and front side airbags, and also benefits from dynamic stability control as standard. It also has an alarm and immobiliser as standard.

The interior room is a cosy space for two occupants, feeling safe and secure without being cramped. The boot space can hardy be described as cavernous, and is quite narrow, but still offers 150 litres of capacity.

The Mazda MX-5 2.0i SE has a 3-year, 60,000 mile warranty as standard. The Mazda MX-5, and the marque in general, has an outstanding reputation for reliability and build quality.

C02 emissions of 177g/km put the Mazda MX-5 2.0i SE in Road Tax Band I.

Value for Money

With a purchase price of £18,785, the Mazda MX-5 2.0i SE is pretty much in a class of its own. A 2.0-litre Audi TT or BMW Z4 roadster would cost at least another £10,000.

The Mazda MX-5 2.0i SE is also sensible to insure, falling into insurance group 27. Combined fuel economy figures of 37.2mpg are by no means exceptional, but certainly acceptable for a sporty 2-seat roadster.

The Mazda MX-5 has traditionally enjoyed an excellent reputation for reliability and build quality, and this has a positive effect on re-sale values. You can expect the Mazda MX-5 2.0i SE to hold its value strongly in accordance with this.
