PROS: This model doesn't just look great but it is also great to drive and has a good range of standard equipment.
CONS: The refinement could be better and the interior is a bit on the fussy side.
The 1.8 petrol engine offers 120 bhp at 5500rpm and 122 lb-ft of torque at 4300rpm. 0-62mph takes 11.7 seconds and top speed is 121mph. These figures sound perfectly adequate but the engine has to work hard to move this car around and the 2.0-litre engines are far superior.
The Mazda6 handles well and the steering, which is perfectly weighted, gives good driver feedback making the car great fun to drive. The brakes offer great bite and feel and the gearchange is incredibly smooth, making the car feel solid on the road. The only downside is the suspension which is quite firm and uncomfortable for a car of this class.
The car offers great looks both inside and out. Unfortunately, the dash is cluttered and difficult to navigate which is a real disadvantage considering the good level of tech offered with this model.
This S model includes power steering, central locking, air con, electric door mirrors and electric windows and MP3 connectivity for a CD compatible stereo all as standard fittings. This is great considering it is the basic model and metallic paint can be added for an extra £420.
The Mazda6 1.8 S is a highly practical car and one of the best in its class. The boot will hold a good 510 litres with the seats in place and folding the seats downs will give you 1,702 litres of space. On top of that the boot is easy to access and load and the seats fold down easily to give a flat loading bay. Cabin space is great too and there is easily enough room for four or five people although the central rear seat is only suitable for smaller passengers.
This being a Japanese car, it has a great reputation for reliability. Despite all the complicated equipment, there have been no reported issues as of yet.
Winning 5 stars in the NCAP crash tests, the Mazda6 is a very safe car. Traction control, electronic stability programme, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist are all fitted as standard. There are plenty of airbags as well; in the front you get curtain and side airbags and curtain bags in the rear. There are also three-point seatbelts for everyone plus Isofix mountings too.
The Mazda is a brilliant car, but once you drive it off the forecourt, it loses value quickly. The engine gives fuel efficiency of 43.5 mpg and carbon emissions of 155g/km which mean it is neither expensive nor cheap to run. At £17,805 the car is very reasonably priced.
