Maserati Overview

Brief History

The Maserati brothers, Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto were all involved with automobiles from the beginning of the 20th century. The brothers initially started building race cars for Diatto, a company that had been around since 1835. The creation of the first Maserati was resultant of Diatto’s decision to suspend the production of race cars in 1926.

Maserati race cars went on to be very successful for the next three decades, claiming in excess of 500 race victories. This continued until 1957 when the company retired from racing after the Guidizzolo tragedy, where 15 people lost their lives, including 13 spectators.

The company would now focus itself on producing road cars. Maserati went on to be owned by French manufacturer, Citroen, in 1968, and later De Tomaso in 1975 after the company went into administration. The company was taken over by Fiat in 1993, by which it is still owned today. Fiat then sold half of Maserati to their biggest competitor, Ferrari, in 1997, who then took full control in 1999. The company has since separated from Ferrari and is once again run by Fiat, who merged Maserati with Alfa Romeo in 2005.

Despite its inconsistent ownership, Maserati continues to manufacture high performance, high quality automobiles that are sought after by race enthusiasts.

Model Range

Maserati Ghibli

The Maserati Ghibli is a Gran Turismo sports car that was produced in two generations, firstly between 1967 and 1973, and later between 1992 and 1997.

The original was a two-door, two-seater with a V8 engine. It had a top speed of 154mph. The car proved to be the most popular model made for road use by Maserati, since the company’s withdrawal from racing in 1957. Over 1200 were produced.

The Ghibli was resurrected as the Ghibli II in 1992, remodelled as a four-seater with a 2.8 litre V6 engine and a 6-speed transmission. The Ghibli II was built with luxury in mind, as well as performance, and featured a leather interior.

Maserati Spyder

The Maserati Spyder is a two-door, two-seater, convertible sports car. The car was in production from 2001 until 2007.

Maserati has based the Spyder on the 3200 GT Coupe; the car’s chassis has been shortened and is stiffer than the one found in the 3200 Coupe. The car sports a 4.2-litre V8 engine and comes with attractive leather trimmed seats.

The Spyder’s engine delivers 390bhp which enables it to top out at 175mph, and reach 0-60mph in less than five seconds. The car provides excellent grip and precise steering, while the brakes and suspension help to enhance the ride even further. An attractive exterior, coupled with the excellent performance, has paid dividends in terms of the popularity of the Spyder.

Maserati Quattroporte

The Maserati Quattroporte is a luxury four-door saloon, one of three models currently in production by Maserati, which has been produced in 5 generations.

The current model has been in production since 2004, of which there are several variants. The Quattroporte sports a 4.2 litre V8 engine and can top out at an impressive 167mph.

The Maserati Quattroporte interior is elegant with leather and wood effect around the steering wheel and leather seats. The car has a long, wide body design and a low ride height. The length and width of the car gives extra space to the passengers for maximum comfort.

Maserati GranTurismo

The Maserati GranTurismo is a two-door grand tourer sports car that has been in production since 2007.

The GranTurismo is everything an Italian super coupe should be – elegant, sophisticated and glamorous. It offers terrific levels of comfort – with space for four – and is enjoyable to drive. As far as running costs are concerned, bills for the Maserati GranTurismo will be relatively high as average fuel economy falls below 20mpg anytime the accelerator pedal is grazed.

There are several versions of the car on the market, including the GranTurismo S and the GranTurismo S Automatic. All models sport a V8 engine and the S Automatic tops out at over 180mph.

Maserati GranCabrio

The Maserati GranCabrio is a convertible version of GranTurismo S Automatic, Maserati's first four-seater convertible. The GranCabrio is powered by the same 4.7 litre V8 engine as the GranTurismo, and has been in production since 2010. Since 2011 there has also been a GranCabrio Sport version available.
