PROS: Efficiency is higher than in the seven seater model and the car still benefits from decent performance credentials and good practicality.
CONS: Off road abilities could be improved and the ride is a bit soft and wallowy.
The 2.0 CRDi engine in this Sorento delivers 147bhp and 282lb-ft of torque mid-way through the rev range. It's a good engine which delivers sufficient power and pulls cleanly but the 2.2-litre CRDi engine is a better all-round performer.
The speed sensitive steering is nicely weighted and the 4x4 handles rough terrain fairly well whilst light controls and good roadholding make the driving experience pleasant. Completely independent suspension makes the drive relaxing but the soft suspension does make for a bouncy ride. Tyre noise is low and grip and composure on the road are impressive but off-road capability is not the Sorento's strong suit.
The Sorento is a good looking car with a stylish front end and a pleasant interior.
Equipment wise you get air conditioning, six-speaker stereo with MP3 connectivity, leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever, metallic dash and door trim, air-con, heated front seats and reversing sensors all as standard fittings. Metallic paint costs an extra £495 .
The Sorento 1 2.0 CRDi has a bigger boot capacity than the KX-2 2.2 CRDi model with 531 litres on offer when the seats are all in place. An increased 1,546 litre capacity is available by folding the seats down but these roomier credentials are available due to the reduced seating capacity which accommodates a maximum of five people in comparison to the KX-2 2.2 CRDi's seven person capacity.
With a five star rating from the NCAP crash tests, the Sorrento is a safe car with plenty of good features. It comes with six airbags, active front headrests, seatbelt pre-tensioners, stability control, downhill brake control, descent control and hill-start assist all as standard features.
The Sorento is a new model so it's not clear yet how strong reliability is likely to be. However, Kia benefits from a strong reliability reputation and this model comes with a seven year warranty for 100,000 miles.
Considering this is a 4x4, albeit a front-wheel-drive model, Kia has rather impressively managed to keep the running costs down with carbon emissions of 169g/km and fuel efficiency of 44.1 mpg - both of which are fairly good for its class. A price tag of £23,095 is also an attractive feature and combines with the car's strong reliability record to make it a good option for long term ownership.
