CarSite Verdict:  3.5/5
The ix35 disappoints in a number of key areas - the ride and handling aren't up to much and the interior feels cheap - but overall it's a decent car and offers plenty of grunt thanks to its impressive diesel engine.

PROS:  Stylish exterior looks, excellent diesel engine, good fuel economy

CONS:  Lacks overall refinement, bumpy ride

Behind the Wheel

The 2.0-litre diesel engine is this ix35 is the pick of the range. It develops 134bhp at 4000rpm and 236lb-ft of torque low down in the rev range meaning there's plenty of pulling power available when you need it. 0-62mph takes 11.3 seconds and flat out you'll be doing 112mph.

The ix35 doesn't handle very well - the steering fails to inspire confidence and the whole car leans horribly through the bends. The ride is also a little jiggly and the cabin is noisy at speed with noise from the road, engine and wind all making an unwelcome appearance.

Looks & Equipment

The ix35 certainly looks the part and has a very stylish external appearance. The interior is similarly good looking although the quality of the plastics leaves a little to be desired in places.

In terms of equipment, the ix35 is relatively well appointed. Alloys, climate control, electric windows, electric sunroof, cruise control, rear parking sensors, CD player, MP3 connectivity, Bluetooth and partial leather seats are all included as standard. Sat-nav can be specced for £1100 and metallic paint will set you back £495.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The ix35 is a very practical car and offers plenty of space in both the cabin and the boot. With the rear seats up you get an impressive 591-litres of boot space and with the rear seats down you get a cavernous 1436-litres.

The ix35 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is supplied as standard with stability control and six airbags. Anti-whiplash head restraints are also included to protect the occupants from neck injuries in the event of an accident.

Hyundai makes very reliable cars and the ix35 is supplied with a five year unlimited mileage warranty which should cover you in the unlikely event that anything goes wrong.

Value for Money

At £24,395, the ix35 2.0 CRDi Premium (4WD) Auto is the most expensive model in he ix35 range but still offers reasonable value for money considering its impressive amount of standard kit.

You should get 47.9mpg on the combined cycle which is impressive for a big 4x4 such as this. CO2 emissions of 189g/km are quite high and put the ix35 into VED band J but insurance should be reasonably cheap under group 19.
