The Honda CR-V 2.0 ES-T 5dr is well equipped, comfortable and blessed with Honda's rock-solid reputation for reliability. However, it's pricey to run, dull to behold and uninspiring to drive.

PROS:  Well equipped, spacious, well made

CONS:  High running costs, not as desirable as a Land Rover Freelander

Behind the Wheel

The Honda CR-V 2.0 ES-T 5dr's 2.0-litre four-pot petrol develops 148bhp and 142lb-ft of torque. The engine feels a little laboured in a car as big as this but, nevertheless, the CR-V achieves some decent performance figures, hitting 62mph in 10.2 seconds and a top speed of 118mph.

The CR-V rides very well, ironing out bumps and imperfections in the road with ease however, the car's comfort levels are spoiled by the engine noise which is always audible. The CR-V handles competently for a 4x4 with good body control and good steering.

Looks & Equipment

The Honda CR-V is by no means an ugly car but Honda seem to be intent on redefining the word 'dull' with their latest range of cars. The CR-V has none of the kudos of a Land Rover Freelander.

Inside, it all seems relatively well put together and part leather, part alcantra seats make the cabin feel a lot more luxurious.

Standard kit includes alloys, climate control, electric windows, cruise control, rear parking sensors, sat-nav and a CD player with MP3 connectivity.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The CR-V is very practical with with 556-litres of luggage space on offer with the rear seats up and 955-litres with the rear seats down.

The CR-V only scored four stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests which is pretty poor for a large 4x4. However, it is an old design and due for replacement so this is understandable.

Hondas are renowned for their reliability and you get a 3 year/90,000 mile warranty in case something does go wrong.

Value for Money

At £25,055, the CR-V 2.0 ES-T offers relatively good value for money thanks to its good build quality and impressive list of standard kit.

However, fuel economy is poor at just 34.4mpg - the diesel models in the range are much more frugal - and CO2 emissions of 190g/km put the CR-V into VED band J which means the Chancellor will sting you for £245 a year. Group 27 insurance, however, is fairly reasonable for a car of this size.
