CarSite Verdict:  3.5/5
The Honda Civic 1.8 i-VTEC EX GT Automatic 5dr is a genuinely great car. Good looking, practical and economical, the Civic offers everything you could really ask from a small family hatchback. The Focus is still a better car but if you fancy something a bit different, the Honda is a fine choice.

PROS:  Great looks, Japanese reliability, good performance

CONS:  Harsh ride, limited rear seat space, so-so handling

Behind the Wheel

The Civic develops 141bhp and 128lb-ft of torque which makes for a 0-62mph time of 11.5 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. The engine is good and responds well to the input of the driver, making the Civic good to drive.

The handling is a bit sub-par thanks to the jarring ride and numb steering. If you want good handling, buy a Focus.

Looks & Equipment

The Civic looks fantastic thanks to mad styling traits like the triangular exhaust pipes and space-age door handles.

The interior quality is superb and the leather seats which come as standard provide a premium feel. standard kit includes alloy wheels, climate control, electric windows, electric mirrors, cruise control, rear parking sensors, sat-nav, CD player with MP3 connectivity and Bluetooth.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Civic benefits from Honda's impressive repuation for reliability and should prove to be very trustworthy indeed. It is covered by warranty for 3 years or 90,000 miles.

The Civic received the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, making it a very safe place to be. Driver, passenger and side airbags all come as standard to the protect occupants in the event of an accident.

This car has a significant amount of boot space, which is ideal for a family car. The boot space when the rear seats are upright is 467 litres, and when the rear seats are folded there is a spacious 1200 litres, which is good for a medium sized family vehicle.

Value for Money

This car is expensive to buy at £25,880 but owners are getting a lot for their money as the car comes fitted with a good amount of standard kit.

Running costs are fairly average - you should get 44.1mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 150g/km put the Civic into VED band F which is neither good nor bad for this type of car. Group 17 insurance is pretty reasonable and means that, unless you're 17 years old, insurance should be pretty cheap.
