Fiat Punto Overview

Available with a good choice of engines - including a range of petrols, diesels and Fiat's two-cylinder TwinAir engine - the new Punto has also received some styling updates. It's one of the biggest superminis around so there's plenty of space inside. It's not the best car in its class to drive and reliability has always been an issue on the little Fiat, but the Punto offers a convincing overall package.

Background

Okay, this is a little bit complicated so bear with me. The original Punto went into production in 1993 and was replaced by the second-generation model in 1999. In 2005, Fiat introduced the Grand Punto, which replaced the Punto in the UK lineup, and this was updated in 2009 and renamed the Punto Evo. The new Punto is a minor update of the old Punto Evo and reverts to the original Punto name. Got that?

Summary

The Punto is a decent choice in the supermini sector but, despite its strong engine line-up, it's beginning to feel its age and can't hope to compete with the likes of the Fiesta and Polo.
