The Citroen C5 2.0 HDi 16v Exclusive offers a good level of standard equipment that makes this already comfortable car luxurious and enjoyable to drive. Whilst acceleration is improved over other models from the Citroen C5 range, carbon emissions and fuel efficiency remain relatively equal and this means the £3,540 price between the 1.6 HDi VTR and 2.0 HDi Exclusive can seem a little steep.

PROS:  Good looking. Impressive level of standard kit. Decent performance.

CONS:  A little bit pricey. The C5's German rivals will hold their value better.

Behind the Wheel

With a maximum power output of 160 bhp and torque figures of 251 lb-ft at 2000 rpm, the C5 has a top speed of 130 mph and accelerates from 0-62mph in an impressive 9.1 seconds.

This is especially impressive when you consider that performance is not the Citroen's strong suit. Comfort is where the Citroen's priorities lie and you won't be disappointed - the C5 is extremely comfortable and makes for a very relaxing driving experience.

Looks & Equipment

The C5 2.0 HDi 16v Exclusive offers a quirky charm and is a good looking car. Buyers will inevitably overlook it and go straight for the German competition, however. Inside, there is plenty of standard equipment on offer and the inside of the car also feels very stylish and luxurious.

Standard equipment for this model includes: power steering, central locking, stability control, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo with MP3 connectivity. Bluetooth connectivity, rear parking sensors and alloy wheels also become standard features, as does a part-leather interior.

Metallic paint is available for £490 and a built-in sat nav is available with a fairly hefty price tag of £1,525.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

In terms of safety, the C5 2.0 HDi 16v Exclusive is fitted with driver, passenger and front side airbags as standards to protect the occupants. An alarm and immobiliser is also fitted as standard to protect the car from theft and the standard addition of stability control and cruise control means drivers should experience few problems when driving.

The car performed well in the NCAP crash tests and received a five star rating for overall safety. Occupant safety was also rated at four stars whilst child safety received four and pedestrian safety received two.

The cabin is generally spacious although the rear seats could do with some additional leg room.

The build feels of a high standard and this means reliability is strong although the car also comes with a three year warranty at 60,000 miles to provide additional reassurance to owners. Boot space is also reasonable with a 439 litre capacity on offer even with the seats in position.

Value for Money

Priced at £24,095 this large family saloon comes with a steeper price tag than the 1.6 HDi VTR. Fuel efficiency is also pretty high and this model is capable of reaching 53.3 mpg on the combined cycle. This is great considering the size of the vehicle and is only slightly lower than the 56.5 mpg achieved in the 1.6 HDi. The model also benefits from fairly strong green credentials with carbon emissions of just 129 g/km. This puts the car into road tax band D which is quite reasonable for cars of this class.

However, the difference in cost between the two models could prompt some buyers to choose the cheaper option due to the minimal differences between the two. The levels of in-car tech are very similar and performance is only marginally improved when it comes to acceleration and top speeds.

Ultimately, those who want a high performance saloon car will opt for the 2.0 litre whilst those who pride economy over power will opt for the 1.6 litre.
