Chevrolet have targeted the Trax at those looking for an SUV which is both compact and car-like to drive. This version of the Trax comes with a good level of equipment and an engine that is powerful enough to handle just about everything you can throw at it, but it is up against some impressive rivals in the small SUV market.

PROS:  The Trax has enough space to carry five adults, is both spacious and practical, and comes with a good range of standard equipment.

CONS:  It's isn't the most exciting car to drive, the interior quality is a little disappointing and depreciation is likely to be steep.

Behind the Wheel

This is the smallest of Chevy's SUV range and as it is based on the chassis of the Aveo, it handles quite well, with accurate if numb steering. The 1.7-litre diesel engine offers reasonably good performance figures, giving a 0-62mph time of 9.4 seconds, which is not at all bad for a vehicle this size, and a top speed of 113mph. While the engine is unstressed on the motorway, the cabin isn't as quiet as some rivals, with plenty of wind noise at speed.

The driving position is very good, offering the desirable high position with plenty of adjustment allowing drivers to find the right driving position for them. The visibility is good thanks to the high driving position, while body roll is kept in check and the fairly soft suspension helps to ensure that all but the largest potholes are dealt with fairly comfortably.

Looks & Equipment

The chunky front end of the Trax is a nod to the style of the 4x4s that have been created by the company for several decades, with the distinctive split grille demonstrating its Chevrolet heritage. The bulging wheel arches and roof bars give the Trax a look that shows it is designed for more than just light road use. However, the interior of the car is not quite as attractive as the exterior, with some of the plastic trim showing where a few shortcuts have been taken.

The level of equipment included with the Trax is very good, with the eighteen inch alloy wheels certainly adding to the beefy-SUV-look of the vehicle. Inside the MyLink entertainment system connects with smart phones to provide accessibility to apps and phone functions through the seven inch touch screen on the centre console. Cruise control, a trip computer and a leatherette interior are all welcome features.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

With a good-sized interior the Trax can carry five people in comfort, with plenty of space and a good sized boo. The reversing camera and high ground learance mean that parking and rough roads shouldn't be an issue, while there are also plenty of cubby holes and storage spaces dotted around the interior.

Bagging the top award of five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, the Trax is supplied with stability aids and a hill start assist system, with this version also including all-wheel drive and a descent control system making it more stable off-road. The engine in the Trax has been tested on several other Chevrolet platforms, so should offer very good reliability.

Value for Money

With a list price of £20,490, this version of the Trax is the most expensive, but is also the most comfortable in the range, with the price point not being too bad when compared with the other top end rivals such as the Vauxhall Mokka and the Skoda Yeti. There are cheaper crossovers available, but the Trax is squarely aimed at the mid-range of the crossover market.

Running costs for the Trax are fairly competitive, with the combined fuel efficiency figure of 57.6mpg competitive with some rivals, and the tax and insurance groups also being comparable. The impressive five-year/100,000 mile warranty is complemented by a one year roadside breakdown assistance policy, completing a fairly attractive deal.
