Chevrolet Camaro Car Reviews

The name Camaro is synonymous with muscle cars and evokes images of the cars of the 60’s and 70’s which featured a roaring V8 engine. This new generation of Camaro also features a 6.2 litre V8 which delivers 426 bhp. It is available in both convertible and coupe and can reach 0-62mph in 5.4 and 5.2 seconds respectively. It was extensively tested at the Nurburgring, and as a result is more competent in the corners than many people expect, given the reputation of American muscle cars. However it is not only designed for track performance, and copes like a GT on the road, soaking up bumps well, providing a comfortable drive.

Chevrolet Camaro Overview

The Camaro is also a surprisingly comfortable car to drive, again giving it more of a feel of a grand tourer than a muscle car. Visibility is not the best however, due to its low profile, narrow windows and substantial pillars, which can make driving about town a little daunting, especially in a car of this size in a left-hand-drive layout.

Room in the front is plentiful, and despite the low roof line, headroom doesn’t feel too impeded, however space in the back is poor. Although there may just be enough legroom for two adults, the sloping roofline really does have an impact here and means they are unlikely to be too comfortable. However, the boot is of a decent size at 384 litres, which is larger than a Ford Focus.

Background

The Chevrolet Camaro was first developed as a competitor to the Ford Mustang, sharing a platform with the Pontiac firebird, and was released at the end of 1966. A second generation was released in 1970 and although early models featured highly tuned V8 engines, as the 70’s progressed the models became less powerful due to emissions regulations and a fuel crisis. 1982 saw the introduction of a third generation, and 1993 a fourth generation before the model was stopped due to deteriorating sales.

The current iteration of the Camaro represents the resurrection of the model, and is the fifth generation, which first went on sale in 2010 in the US. It has been made available in Europe since 2012. This generation of the Camaro has received a number of awards, including the World Car Design of the Year at the 2010 World Car of the Year Awards. It has also made a number of appearances in popular culture, including in the Transformers film, in which a second generation Camaro also appeared.

Summary

The Camaro combines sleek, up-to-date styling with the presence that is paramount to muscle car design.
