PROS: Absolutely insane performance, handles well
CONS: Very expensive, completely pointless, hideous to look at
The X6 M offers absolutely unbelievable performance. Its twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine churns out 555bhp and 501lb-ft of torque, propelling it from 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph.
Through the corners it's absolutely brilliant. God knows how BMW have done it but they've managed to make a high-riding coupe/4x4 which handles like a well sorted saloon car. There is very little body roll, the steering is sharp and crisp and the brakes are superb. The X6 M does display a tendency towards understeer but this is to be expected in a car that weighs more than the moon.
The X6 is absolutely grotesque. BMW do make some strange looking cars but the X6 has to take the biscuit. A 4x4 with a coupe body shouldn't work... and it doesn't.
It's business as usual on the inside - good quality materials put together well. The dash is a little bit dreary, however.
The X6 M comes with leather seats, power steering, metallic paint, cruise control, rear parking sensors, stability control, climate control, 19 inch alloy wheels, stereo, satellite navigation and MP3 connectivity as standard, with optional extras including Bluetooth for £585.
BMW have a strong reputation for reliability and the X6 should prove to be very mechanically stable.
It should be safe too with standard safety equipment including front, side and curtain airbags, Dynamic Stability Control inclusive of ABS, corning brake control, dynamic break control and dynamic traction control. The X6 also comes with an alarm, deadlocks and an engine immobiliser as standard.
There is plenty of space in the X6 for all four passengers, although the rear passengers may have head room restricted by the sloping roof. The boot is fairly spacious too with 570 litres to offer and 1450 litres when the rear seats are folded down.
The X6 M costs £82,190 which is very expensive indeed, even for an M division Beemer. It's a full ten grand more expensive than an M5 and, be under no illusions, the M5 is the better car.
The X6 M returns 72.3mpg on the combined cycle. Only joking, you'll be lucky to top 20mpg, and CO2 emissions of 325g/km mean that the X6 M falls under the highest VED band, M.
It is a great car for what it is but it's rather pointless and there are much better cars around for much less.
BMW are following in Mercedes's footsteps by trying to fill almost imperceptibly small gaps in the market with brand new cars. The X6 is a fine example of this. It's as well-made and as prestigious...
In terms of performance, the X6 M is hard to fault. However, what exactly is it for? You're better off buying an M3 or M5, both of which are faster, cheaper and better looking.
