PROS: A cheap, affordable option with great fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. The SE trim has lots of equipment as standard.
CONS: The suspension is a little firm and rear space is at a premium.
The xDrive18d SE has a two-litre diesel engine which produces 143bhp and 236lb-ft of torque. This means 0-62mph takes 9.6 seconds and the top speed is 124mph.
The X1 handles remarkably well for such a tall car with very little roll through the bends and a planted feel on the road. However, the steering is a little numb and, as is the way with BMWs, the ride is very firm.
Overall refinement, however, is good and there is very little wind or road noise evident in the cabin.
The X1 is an odd looking car, not tall enough to be a soft-roader nor low enough to look like a conventional saloon. BMW have built a car for a market that clearly doesn't exist and the X1 looks awkward because of it.
It's the typical BMW story on the inside. The cabin is sober but practical and the quality of the materials is high.
The SE trim comes with power steering, rear parking sensors, stability control, climate control, alloy wheels, stereo and MP3 connectivity as standard, with optional extras including leather seats for £1115, cruise control for £235, Bluetooth for £205 and satellite navigation for £1460.
The X1 has good headroom all round but legroom in the rear is at a premium and isn't helped by the instrusive transmission tunnel which makes the middle rear seat suitable only for the shorter passenger. However, the boot space is good at 420-litres and expands to 1350-litres with the rear seats folded down.
The X1 scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and is fitted with six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control and ABS.
BMWs are generally very reliable cars and there is no reason to believe the X1 will be any different.
The sDrive18d SE costs £24,420, making it the cheapest model in the X1 range.
It should also be very cheap to run, returning 54.3mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 136g/km mean the X1 falls under VED band E. The X1 18d also falls under the 21% company car tax band, making it a good choice for business users.
