Audi R8 Car Reviews

This stunning supercar is available as a coupe or a spyder (convertible). There is also a choice of two engines in each, a 420bhp 4.2-litre V8, or the even-crazier 5.2-litre V10, which is capable of producing 525bhp. Both engines are mind-blowingly fast, rocketing from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and 3.9 seconds for the V8 and V10 respectively. Fuel economy obviously isn’t great, but anyone able to afford this car won’t find that an issue.

Audi R8 Overview

The handling of the R8 matches the breath-taking performance that the engines provide. It is a delicate, well poised car, with the low centre of gravity, wide stance and mid-engine set up giving the most response handling you could wish for, whilst the Quattro four-wheel drive keeps it glued to the road.

As with any supercar it’s not the most practical of vehicles, but who would buy one for their practicality? There’s a 100 litre compartment under the bonnet and a shelf behind the seats that Audi claim is large enough for 2 golf bags. Aside from the lack of storage space, there is plenty of head and shoulder room inside, and the supportive seats make driving long distances a pleasure.

Background

First seen at the Frankfurt motor show in 2003, as the Audi Le Mans concept car, the R8 went on sale in 2007. It was entirely designed and manufactured by Quattro GmbH, a subsidiary owned by Audi that specialises in the production of high performance vehicles. Other models that they have produced include the RS3, RS4 and RS5.

It is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform and features an aluminium monocoque as part of Audi’s ‘space frame’ principles. Originally the R8 was only available with the V8 engine, but the V10 was introduced in 2008. The Spyder was introduced in 2009 and appeared in the movie Iron Man 2.

Summary

The R8 is a top supercar, refined enough for everyday use, which makes it a real competitor to the Porsche 911.
