If you are looking for a family car that promises drivers smooth handling, performance, safety and low running costs in a stylish and well crafted body, then the Audi A1 1.6 TDI SE could be the car for you. With a beautiful exterior and excellent performance profile, it is a car the family and first-time buyers can rely upon.

PROS:  With an attractive price, the diesel engine provides excellent performance and smooth cruising at low running costs. Equipped with an advanced safety kit, the car enjoys excellent dealer services and resale values.

CONS:  The 1.6 TDI SE has cramped rear seating. The sloping roofline makes the seating suitable for children, but not average sized adults. The diesel engine is not as smooth and quiet as the A1 petrol engines.

Behind the Wheel

The diesel engine delivers a decent power output of 103bhp at 4400 rpm with torque figures at 184 lb-ft at 1500-2500 rpm. The car has impressive fuel economy at 74.3 mpg and gives an excellent performance for a family car with a top speed of 118 mph, going from 0-62 mph in 10.5 seconds.

The A1 car line has a long top gear to keep revs down and fuel economy up at high speeds. It comes with a standard and convenient stop and start system, which also aids in conserving fuel. The 1.6 TDI SE allows for comfortable cruising on different terrain, but the diesel engine tends to rattle when pulling away. Petrol models of the A1 line are much quieter.

The car is fitted with firm, supportive seats, adjustment levers and a properly organised dash board with clear placed and easy to use instruments. The windows provide a good view out and the central control unit and screen give easy access to many of the car's functions.

Looks & Equipment

The car has a nicely crafted exterior and an attractive cabin layout. It is fitted with basic driving equipment but lacks the high end driving technology found in standard models of other car models. The car's technology includes stability control, electric door mirrors and front windows, a stereo system, Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity. Audi offers additional features at extra costs including climate control, powered seat adjustment, satellite-navigation, cruise control, rear parking sensors, auto dimming rear view mirrors and a tracking device.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Audi A1 1.6 TDI SE has a big and useful boot which can accommodate adequate luggage for long roads trips and large shopping errands. Even though the car is a four seater, only its front seats have adequate room while the rear seats are cramped due to the sloping roof line. They are suitable for small children but not for average sized adults.

The car comes equipped with an advanced safety kit with a five out of five Euro NCAP rating. Along with the basic six air bags and anti-lock brakes, the car has stability control with an electronic rear differential which helps the driver safely round corners at high speeds. Audi also offers daytime running lights and automatic beam adjustment as additional safety kit options for the A1.

The car comes with a three year warranty or 60,000 miles. It has decent running costs coming under the low cost road tax band of A and the insurance premium bracket of 14. With very good fuel economy, the car has excellent green credentials with a EURO 5 emissions rating and a carbon footprint of 99 g/m.

Value for Money

The Audi A1 is priced at £14,480. It is a very affordable price for a stylish, economical, safe and proficient car. The car is an excellent investment for families and first time buyers looking for long term ownership. It is the cheapest family car model in the Audi line which delivers good fuel economy and low carbon emissions that keep the running costs at a minimum.

The car can be used comfortably for day to day tasks from school runs and grocery shopping to road trips and holidays. It pays for itself by enjoying good dealer services and an excellent quality and reliability record. Additionally, the car's performance profile and the Audi brand grant it excellent resale values.
