The Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 TB Turismo 5-door doesn’t offer the most room in its class or even the best overall drive, but it does come nicely packaged with some really good engines, Italian styling which sets it apart from its competition and this entry level model is competitively priced. You’ll simply love driving it.

PROS:  The Giulietta Turismo 1.4 TB rides well, its excellent steering, the distinctive Alfa Italian styling, its smooth engine, it’s well priced and equipped and its superior grip.

CONS:  Lacks rear seat space, lack of standard equipment such as alloy wheels and alarm.

Behind the Wheel

Finding a good driving position is no problem thanks to the ample front seat adjustment and likewise with the steering wheel. The dash is typically stylish and functional with most of the controls being well laid out and easy to use, apart from the awkward stereo controls. Rear visibility is not as good as you’d maybe like it to be.

The turbocharged 1.4L, 4 cylinder, 16V petrol unit in the Giulietta Turismo is smooth and potent, getting you from 0-62mph in a mere 9.2 seconds, and capable of pushing on to 121 mph top speed. The 120bhp version kicks its maximum out at around 5,000rpm and pulls well with 152lbs/ft of torque at 1,750rpm.

The Giulietta Turismo handles well, feeling light footed and agile while on the move, in part due to the quick response steering. While the overall ride is good, it lacks the balance offered by the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf.

A degree of wind noise is evident at the door mirrors when cruising at speed, but in general road noise only becomes apparent on the roughest road surfaces.

Looks & Equipment

The Giulietta Turismo is classy externally as you’d expect from an Alfa, and its interior doesn’t disappoint either.

This model, which is the entry-level version to the Giulietta range, comes with standard central locking, stability control, air conditioning, electric door mirrors, electric front windows; driver, passenger and front side airbags, immobiliser, CD system, and stop-start engine technology for economy.

Disappointingly though, there are no alloy wheels or alarm included, which would add an extra £620 to the price. Further add-ons available to fully kit it out include climate control at £410, metallic paint at £510, cruise control at £260, rear-parking sensors at £260, leather seats at £1610, alarm at £260 and a satellite navigation system for £1,230.

A better proposition is upgrading to the Lusso version. That will get you alloy wheels, steering wheel- stereo controls and Bluetooth, and the Veloce version adds sports suspension and sports trim too. The top of the range Cloverleaf come with the best sports suspension set-up and includes an impressive range of cosmetic improvements.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Although not as compact as a VW Golf, The Giulietta Turismo offers space enough in the front for driver and passenger, it’s in the rear where heads and knees will be challenged. However, it does come with a boot that is a good size (350 litres) equalling that of the rival Golf.

The Giulietta Turismo scores well in the Euro NCAP ratings with a 5 overall. Its stability control system; front, side and curtain airbags, and active anti-whiplash front head-restraints all contribute to one of the best Euro NCAP scores ever.

Every version is equipped with deadlocks and marked parts to protect it against theft.

Value for Money

The Giulietta Turismo, tagged at £17,755, is less expensive than its main rival the Golf and should hold its value well in terms of resale. Good average fuel economy of 44.1mpg makes it quite economical to run and comparable with its Golf and Ford Focus competition, even though it’s faster and pulls better. C02 emissions of 149g/km put it in Road Tax Band F at £110 a year, and being in insurance group 16 also makes it an attractive option.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 TB Turismo 5-door offers good value all round for a car that’s a bit different, but if you’re an Alfa fan and yearn for something with a little more poke, try the Giulietta Cloverleaf version offering hot-hatch performance with equipment and trim to boot. You’ll need deeper pockets though, as it’s quite a bit more than the Turismo.
