Volkswagen has revealed the first images of its new Golf Sportsvan concept, which previews the successor to the existing Golf Plus.
Like the standard Golf, the Golf Sportsvan is based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB architecture; however, it's 83mm longer, 80mm wider and 126mm taller than the standard car, giving improved interior space. The wheelbase is also up by 48mm on the standard car.
As a result of this, the Sportsvan offers 498-litres of luggage space (compared to the Golf's 380-litres). The rear seats also slide backwards and forwards by up to 180mm, increasing luggage capacity to 585-litres when they're fully forward. The seats can also be folded flat, giving 1,512-litres of space.
Safety features included on the Sportsvan include an automatic post-collision braking system, which automatically brakes the vehicle after a crash, reducing the likelihood of a second impact, and a PreCrash system which pretentions the seatbelts and closes the windows and sunroof when an imminent accident is detected.
The engine range for the new Golf Sportsvan will include four turbocharged petrol engines developing 84bhp, 108bhp, 123bhp and 148bhp, and three turbodiesels: a 148bhp 2.0-litre, an 89bhp 1.6-litre unit and a 108bhp 1.6-litre lump.
The Sportsvan will go on sale in the UK in mid-2014 but will not use the Sportsvan name. Naming and pricing information will be confirmed closer to launch.
Volkswagen will unveil the new Golf Sportsvan concept at this week's Frankfurt Motor Show.
