This is the first time an estate version of the Leon has been offered, joining the Leon range alongside the existing five-door and three-door SC models. By contrast, the previous Leon was sold in five-door guise only.
Although the wheelbase remains the same, the Leon SE is 27cm longer than the hatch. The upshot of this is that it offers 207-litres more bootspace than the standard car, with 587-litres available with the rear seats up and 1,470-litres with the rear seats folded down.
This means that the Leon offers slightly less luggage space than both the Volkswagen Golf and Skoda Octavia estates with which it shares its underpinnings. However, the Leon does offer a double boot floor, improving practicality, and the passenger seat backrest can be folded down to accommodate longer items.
The engine line-up for the new ST is carried directly over from the standard car, with a range of petrol and diesel engines with displacements ranging from 1.2 to 2.0 litres and power outputs from 104bhp to 181bhp on offer.
The most frugal model in the range, the 1.6-litre TDI diesel, emits just 88g/km of CO2 and will return 85mpg on the combined cycle. The most powerful model in the range, the 2.0-litre turbodiesel, offers 181bhp and 280lb-ft of torque, while returning 65.7mpg combined.
Prices for the new Leon ST have yet to be confirmed but we'd expect the estate to cost between £500 and £1,000 more than the five-door hatch, with a starting price of between £16,000 and £16,500.
