SEAT will launch a new, sportier three-door version of its Leon at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Called the SC (for Sports Coupe), this is the first time SEAT has offered its Golf rival in three-door form.

With the removal of the rear doors, the Leon has also lost 35mm from its wheelbase, giving the car a look which the Spanish firm claims is both "sporty and powerful, yet very compact." However, despite the SC's dinkier dimensions, SEAT claims that the three-door benefits from the same amount of boot space -- 380-litres -- as the five door, although rear passenger space is likely to have been compromised.

The engine line-up for the Leon SC mirrors that of the five-door. This means a choice of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, including 1.2-, 1.4- and 1.8-litre petrol engines and 1.6- and 2.0-litre diesel units.

Like the standard Leon, the SC will be available in S, SE and FR trim levels, but will cost £500 less than its bigger brother when it goes on sale in the UK.

A Leon ST estate model is due to be added to the range later this year and hot Cupra versions of all three bodystyles will become available in 2013.

The SEAT Leon SC is expected to reach UK showrooms in July.
