British sports car manufacturer Caterham has teamed up with Renault to design and build two new two-seater sports cars.

The two manufacturers have created a new company, Societe des Automobiles Alpine Caterham, which will build the new cars at Renault's Alpine plant in Dieppe.

Both companies aim to launch a two-seater sports car onto the market within the next four years.

The Renault model will carry the Alpine name, the first car to do so since 1994. Originally an independent sports car manufacturer, Alpine was bought by Renault in the 1970s and the name was subsequently used on Renault's performance cars. The name recently appeared on Renault's Alpine 110-50 Concept, which debuted at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this year.

Both the Renault and Caterham models will shares platforms and engines, but will feature unique bodywork, suspension and interiors.

Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of Renault, said: "This innovative partnership with Caterham embodies a longstanding ambition: the creation of a sports car with the Alpine DNA. It carries both opportunities for the Dieppe plant and the development of its historic expertise."

Very few details on the new cars have been announced; however, it is highly likely that both the Alpine and the Caterham will be lightweight and rear-wheel drive, and will cost between around £30,000 and £40,000.
