Porsche has announced that its new Porsche mini 4x4 will be named the Porsche Macan. Its production will start in 2013 at the world famous Porsche factory in Leipzig, Germany.

"The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects and evoke positive associations", said Bernhard Maier, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG.

Porsche has decided to call its new sports car Macan because it is derived from the Indonesian word for 'tiger' and the car maker has declared that the 'car combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics.' All those are core characteristics of this new all-terrain car, according to the car maker.

Hoping to achieve as much success as the Cayenne, the luxury car brand wants to expand its model portfolio. Porsche is hoping the Macan will play a key role as part of the company's Strategy 2018.

Porsche factory in Leipzig

The Porsche Macan will start being produced next year in the Porsche factory in Leipzig, Germany. That factory is actually being expanded into a fully-fledged production plant at the moment. With 500 million Euros of investment, it is one of the biggest building projects in the corporate history of Porsche. Furthermore, the car manufacturer said it will be creating more than 1,000 new jobs in the medium-term.

Recently, the Porsche factory in Leipzig celebrated the best year in its history. According to the car brand, last year 93,838 new Porsche vehicles rolled off the production line; 62,004 examples of the all-wheel drive Cayenne and 31,834 of the four door Panamera Gran Turismo.

"We were able to increase production in Leipzig by 47 per cent compared with the year before and are showing an increase also in 2012, following the record performance in 2011," explained Wolfgang Leimgruber, Member of the Executive Board Production and Logistics of Porsche AG.
