Peugeot has released the first official pictures and details of the new 2008, which is set to rival the Nissan Juke and the Skoda Yeti in the compact crossover segment.
The 2008, which is due to go on show at the Geneva Motor Show in March, is based on the Peugeot 208 supermini and shares many of its styling cues with its smaller brother. It was previewed as a concept at the Paris Motor Show in September.
On the outside, the front grille, bonnet and front and rear headlights are clearly inspired by the 208, while a higher ride height, chunky black bumpers and roof rails differentiate the 2008 from the supermini. 17-inch wheels and a full-length panoramic sunroof complete the exterior transformation.
The 2008 will be offered with front-wheel drive only and will be fitted with a range of engines borrowed from the 208. The engine line-up will include a turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit, as well as 1.4- and 1.6-litre diesels. The most efficient of the new 2008s will return more than 60mpg and emit less than 100g/km of CO2.
Peugeot clearly has high hopes for its new 2008 and is planning to market the car globally. It will go into production at three factories in France, China and Brazil.
The new 2008 will arrive in UK showrooms in September. And although Peugeot has yet to release any pricing or specification details, expect prices for the new car to start at around £13,000.
