This is the Nissan ZEOD RC and, quite apart from looking like something from the pages of Isaac Asimov, it also happens to be the fastest electric racing car in the world.
Nissan is entering the ZEOD (which, by the way, stands for Zero Emissions on Demand) in next year's gruelling Le Mans 24-hour race in order to obtain crucial information on how electric motors can be used in the Japanese firm's high-performance production cars.
As you can see, the ZEOD looks strikingly similar to that other bonkers Nissan racing car, the DeltaWing. However, while the DeltaWing was fitted with a conventional petrol engine, the ZEOD gets something altogether more exotic.
Unfortunately, we don't know exactly what that is yet because Nissan will test a number of powertrain configurations between now and next year before settling on the final specification. What we can tell you is that the ZEOD will use the same battery technology found in the Leaf. We can also tell you that the ZEOD will be pretty fast and capable of speeds in excess of 186mph.
Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President of Nissan, said: "Nissan has become a global leader in the development of zero emission automotive technology and the Nissan ZEOD RC will allow us to further develop those capabilities using the toughest endurance race in the world as a mobile test bed to test the potential of our planned LM P1 power train."
