Nissan has improved its GT-R GT3 racing car ahead of the 2013 motorsport season.

The new GT-R GT3 has been tweaked by Nismo, Nissan's motorsport division, and features an improved engine, better brakes, new suspension and improved aerodynamics.

The boffins at Nismo have reinforced the GT-R's 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine for better reliability, and have tweaked the camshaft timing. As a result, the new GT3 produces 543bhp and 470lb-ft of torque -- 23bhp and 19lb-ft more than the 2012 model.

Four-wheel drive is banned under GT3 rules and the GT-R sends its power to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox with new gear ratios which are said to be optimised for the increased engine output.

To increase aerodynamic performance, new canards have been added to the front of the GT3, and the rear spoiler has been moved to increase balance and downforce.

Nismo is currently developing an upgrade kit for 2012 models which will allow last year's car to be upgraded to the new specification.

The Nissan GT-R GT3 is available to order now, with prices starting from £270,000 before tax.
