Two world-firsts in technology will make the XC90 a world leader in driver safety.
The revamped model will be available from August and will use technologies which will make Volvo a world pioneer in safety. Volvo have made it their mission that nobody should be killed or seriously injured in one of their cars by 2020; recent developments are bringing them ever closer to that vision.
Two of the XC90's advances will be world-firsts, namely run-off road protection and auto braking at junctions.
Run-off road protection will take action when the car detects it has left the roadway, the seatbelts will tighten to restrain passengers and the seats have been improved to reduce vertical forces on the spine. There will also be steering aids and warning systems to let drivers know when they are at danger of leaving their normal lane.
Auto braking at junctions will activate when a driver turns in front of an oncoming car. The car can detect when a collision is likely and will brake to reduce the risk of it happening.
“Committing to safety is not about passing a test or getting a ranking,” says Prof. Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist Safety at Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “It is about finding out how and why accidents and injuries occur and then developing the technology to prevent them. We lead, the industry follows.”
