Euro NCAP have announced their list of Best in Class new models crash tested over the past twelve months.

It was a busy 2015 for Euro NCAP who conducted safety testing on over 40 new models released on the European market. Their tests are now more stringent than ever with a new full width frontal test, and with tests on Autonomous Emergency Braking Pedestrian Systems due to come in this year the standards are only going to get higher.

Volvo’s XC90 was the best overall performer in 2015 Euro NCAP testing, in addition to its best in class crown in the large off-roader category. The XC90 achieved an outstanding 97% for adult occupant protection, and a maximum 100% for its safety assistance systems.  The award for best small off-roader went to the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

It was neck and neck between the Jaguar XE and Toyota Avensis in the large family car category, but the big cat eventually took the top award due to its level of standard fit safety equipment, much of which are optional extras on the Toyota.

The Infinit Q30 scooped the best in class award in the small family car category thanks to its strong all-round performance in crash testing. In particular, the Q30’s active bonnet helped it score exceptionally highly in the pedestrian protection category.

Honda’s advanced safety system fitment strategy saw its Jazz edge out the Suzuki Vitara in what was a photo finish in the supermini class.

In the MPV class, the VW Touran collected the award for best small MPV while the Ford Galaxy/S-MAX scooped the honours for large MPV.

None of the tested roadsters achieved 5-stars, with manufacturers seemingly paying less attention to areas such as crash avoidance technology. Nonetheless, the Mazda MX-5 lifted the best in class crown with four stars.
