Chris Evans has announced that he will no longer be presenting the new version of Top Gear once season one is over.
This news comes after rumours circulated online that Matt Leblanc had threatened to quit the show if Chris Evans stays.
It seems however that the reasons for Chris Evans' departure is likely to be a result of the heavy amounts of criticism since the show aired earlier this year, coupled with the shows falling ratings since Evans took the wheel. In a tweet he stated: “Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that’s not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best.”
Filling the shoes of Jeremy, James, and Hammond was always going to be a hard thing to do, especially considering their following. People were always going to be quick to criticise the new hosts no matter what. As fellow petrol heads our hearts go out to Chris Evans, as it's clear to see he's gutted with how things have unfolded. You could tell whilst watching that he was putting his heart and soul into it, but the chemistry just wasn't there. He has devoted his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show to the "Top Gear gang", who he is still apparently fond of. He titled the show "Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On".
Top Gear is of huge importance to the BBC, so they will be eager to keep things moving, though according to the Radio Times, the BBC are not looking to replace Evans. We think that might be a mistake. What made the original Top Gear so enjoyable was the fact that you really did feel like you were watching three best mates having a great time. Whilst we’re sure Matt LeBlanc could pull it off on his own, we think he'd do a lot better with a little help from his FRIENDS; does anybody know if Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer are available?
