The 2011 Geneva Motor show will see the European debut of Cadillac’s Urban Luxury Concept (ULC) Car.

To create the Urban Luxury Concept car Cadillac's designers set out to design a new type of vehicle which would offer a luxury experience behind the wheel of a small city vehicle running on hybrid power.

The hybrid propulsion system of the ULC is itself a concept study. It includes a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine which employs electric assist technology, brake energy recuperation, dry dual-clutch transmission and engine start-stop function. Drawing on production experience and extending it into a prototype model, Cadillac has created an engine which allows the car to achieve fuel consumption of 67mpg in the city or 78mpg on the motorway.

Clay Dean, who is the Director of GM North American Advanced Design and Cadillac Brand Champion, said of the ULC, "The Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept celebrates its scale with intelligent, innovative content that makes it unique regardless of its size. It has a small exterior footprint, but is roomy inside."

The car has four seats and includes easy access through a pair of scissor-type doors which extend outwards and rotate forward when they are opened. The design of the car aims to create a roomy passenger area despite the small overall size. The cabin is trimmed in the very best and most beautiful materials, and features an array of next-generation interactive technology.

Most of the traditional gauges and dials, including the controls for the audio and climate control systems, are replaced by Touch-pad screens and projected readouts, which helps to free up room for the increased passenger space.

The Managing Director of Cadillac Europe, Mr Wolfgang Schubert, said, "While small in size, this concept is an exploration of what Cadillac could be in the future, as the brand continues to focus on redefining industry standards for advanced vehicle design and integrated technology."
