Volkswagen has just unveiled the new XL1, a new Super Efficient Vehicle which can achieve 313mpg.

The XL1 is a showcase for pioneering new techniques in efficiency. Producing just 25g/km of CO2, VW claim it will go 340 miles on a single 10-litre tank.

Power comes from a diesel-electric hybrid engine which consists of a 47bhp turbodiesel unit, mated to a 26bhp electric motor, developing a total output of 73bhp which is sent, via seven-speed gearbox, to the rear wheels. The XL1 is also able to run for 22 miles using just the electric motor, generating no carbon emissions whatsoever.

About as long as the average supermini and as tall as a Lamborghini Gallardo, the XL1 is incredibly aerodynamic. It uses cameras in place of drag-creating rear view mirrors. High-tech materials keep the weight low as well – 795kg.

Unbelievably, in the performance stakes, the XL1 is no slouch. 62mph arrives in a distinctly average 11.9 seconds and the XL1 will hit 99mph.

And if the prospect of getting from London to Carlisle on a gallon of diesel appeals to you then… you’re out of luck. VW has no plans to put it into production.
