BMW has revealed its new X4, a coupe version of the X3 which is designed to slot into BMW's SUV-cum-coupe range below the existing X6.

Unveiled in concept form at last year's Shanghai Motor Show, the new X4 will debut at the New York Motor Show next month and will cost from £36,590 when it goes on sale in the UK in July.

Like the X6, the new X4 combines the raised driving position and ride height of a conventional SUV with the sleek, aerodynamic proportions of a traditional coupe. Based on the X3 platform, the new X4 is 14mm longer and 36mm lower, while the driver sits 20mm closer to the ground.

Three diesel engines will be on offer from launch: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 187bhp, and a brace of 3.0-litre straight-sixes, with 255bhp and 309bhp. The BMW X4 xDrive20d (with the 2.0-litre engine) comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, with an eight-speed auto available as an option, while the xDrive30d and xDrive35d are fitted with the self-shifter as standard.

The baby of the range, the xDrive20d, will hit 62mph in 8.0 seconds and carry on accelerating to 132mph, while the flagship xDrive35d will manage 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds and hit 153mph. CO2 emissions and fuel economy range from 143g/km and 52.3mpg in the 20d, to 157g/km and 47.1mpg in the 35d.

BMW claims that the X4 will be sharper to drive than the X3, with all models coming as standard with a "sporty" suspension setup and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system.

The X4 will also come with a much greater selection of standard kit than the X3, with all models coming with an automatically-opening tailgate, variable steering, 18-inch alloys, front and rear parking sensors, xenon headlights, a leather steering wheel and heated front seats.

For an extra £1,500, the xLine trim adds 18-inch light-alloy wheels, aluminium exterior and copper interior trim and xLine leather upholstery.

Top of the range is the M Sport, which costs £3,000 more than the standard SE but adds M bodystyling, 19-inch M Sport alloys, M Sport suspension, sports seats and unique interior trim.
