BMW has updated its M5 performance saloon with a range of minor styling improvements and technical tweaks.
The new M5, which has been revealed alongside the new, updated 5 Series range, will be launched in June, with the first customer deliveries pencilled in for September.
Mechanically speaking, the new M5 is largely identical to its predecessor, with a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 sending its power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. However, buyers are now able to opt for a new Competition Package, which boosts the car's power output from 552bhp to 567bhp and cuts 0.1 seconds from the old car's 4.3-second 0-62mph time.
The Competition Package also adds stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, and lowers the car by 10mm. The hydraulic power steering has also been made 10 per cent faster and the Active M Differential has been improved, giving better traction.
On the outside, the M5 gets a new grille, new taillights, and new optional LED headlights. There is also a range of new paint schemes on offer which includes matte finishes, and lightweight seven-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the new car gets a new steering wheel, more storage under the front armrest and additional chrome trim.
BMW has yet to announce the price list for the new M5 Competition Package, but it seems likely that the upgraded cars will cost around £2,500 more than the standard model, which starts from £73,350. The Competition Package will also be available on the M6 and M6 Gran Coupe.
