BMW has refreshed its 5 Series line-up with a range of styling and mechanical tweaks and the addition of a new entry-level diesel model, the 518d.
The new 5 Series is available to order now, with the first customer deliveries expected in September, and features new bumpers, tweaked headlights and taillights, a new range of alloy wheels and LED indicators in the door mirrors.
The 5 Series Gran Turismo has also been updated with a new front apron and a redesigned rear end, which increases luggage space from 440-litres to 500-litres.
In addition to this, a range of new exterior colours, upholstery colours and interior trim elements are available across the 5 Series, 5 Series Touring and 5 Series Gran Turismo ranges.
The biggest change to the range, however, is the introduction of a new entry-level oil-burner, the 518d. Despite its name, the 518d is fitted with the same 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine fitted to the 520d, but detuned to produce 141bhp and 266lb-ft of torque, compared to the 520d's 181bhp and 280lb-ft.
The 518d will get from 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds, return a combined 62.8mpg and emit 119g/km of CO2.
The 520d has also been given a retune, and can now complete the 0-62mph dash in 8.1 seconds and return the same economy and CO2 figures as the 518d. As a result of this, the 520d EfficientDynamics model has been discontinued.
Thanks to the introduction of the 518d, the new 5 Series range starts at a lower starting price of £29,030; however, there's a slight increase across the rest of the range. The 520d is now priced from £31,530 (up from £30,430), the 520d SE Touring costs £33,855 (up from £32,955) and the 5 Series Gran Turismo range now starts from £37,605 (up from £37,005).
