The BMW Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo has gone on sale, with prices starting from £46,950 for the saloon and £49,950 for the Touring estate.
Based on the BMW 330d, the Alpina D3 Bi-Turbo is powered by an Alpina-tuned version of BMW's 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine which develops 345bhp and 516lb-ft of torque. The upshot of this is that this diesel-powered 3 Series will hit 62mph in 4.6 seconds and carry on accelerating right up to 173mph.
But despite the impressive performance figures, the Alpina will manage 53.2mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 139g/km of CO2.
Alpina's 50 development engineers have achieved the impressive figures by tweaking the engine, gearbox, cooling system, body structure, wheels, tyres, suspension, aerodynamics and interior -- everything, basically.
On the outside, the Alpina gets new bumpers and side skirts, new 19-inch Alpina alloy wheels and a smattering of Alpina badges, all of which indicate that this is no normal 3 Series. On the inside, the leather electrically-adjustable heated sport seats get Alpina logos, as do the door sills. There's also a model plaque on the centre console which shows the car's unique build number.
Alpina is also keen to point out the D3's credentials as a company car choice. Because of its low CO2 emissions, the D3 incurs a BIK tax rate of 22 per cent, which means that a 40 per cent tax payer would currently pay just £344.66 per month.
