For a good convertible to be considered great, it must tempt you to keep the roof down as much as possible. For while some cars are about out-and-out performance, a convertible gives you access to the simpler thrills of motoring.

Our winner must be enjoyable to drive, good-looking and, above all, fun.

Mazda MX-5

Mazda MX-5

The legend. The Mazda MX-5 has been around since 1989 but it has lost none of its appeal in the meantime. It is still enjoyable to drive, well-made, reliable and cheap to buy, making it easy to see why it remains the world's best-selling convertible.

MINI Roadster

MINI Roadster

Whereas most MINIs are among the more expensive models in their respective classes, the MINI Roadster is one of the more affordable drop-tops on the market. It's also great fun to drive, good-looking, beautifully-made and blessed with a sort of cheekiness which makes it hugely appealing.

Porsche Boxster

Porsche Boxster

The engineers at Porsche really know how to make a car enjoyable and involving to drive. The Boxster is nothing short of sensational, whether you're hanging it out on the ragged edge or pottering around town. It's also surprisingly practical, comfortable and good-looking. It really is difficult to pick fault with the Boxster.
