For a long time Volvo has been an afterthought in the large saloon market. With such a strong field of rivals it is often the forgotten choice. For most people BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Jaguar all present a better option than anything the Swedish manufacturer has had to offer.

The S60 T6 AWD has certainly ticked enough boxes to make it competitive in its field. It is well built, has a spacious interior, a smooth ride and sensible yet striking styling.

PROS:  The Volvo S60 is one of the most spacious cars in its class and the four wheel drive adds to the sense of security and stability. It is well styled on the outside and has a well-equipped interior.

CONS:  The handling is a not up to the standard of other four wheel drive saloons and the ride is not as smooth as many of its competitors.

Behind the Wheel

With an economy figure 28.5 mpg the S60 T6 AWD is not a cheap option, however this is hardly the point as the T6 AWD is a performance car.

With a top speed of 155mph and 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds, this is a very fast car. This is due to the powerful 300bhp engine with its 324 lb-ft of torque. In contrast to this the BMW 530i has a 368bhp engine with 236 lb-ft of torque.

The handling of the S60 T6 AWD is excellent - its lack of height means it is sharp and agile around corners.

The ride in the Volvo is smooth as you would expect from the Swedish manufacturer but it is still a little behind the German manufacturers, with BMW, Mercedes, and Audi providing cars with a smoother, and quieter ride. One of the S60 S60 T6 AWD R-DESIGN's main problems is the wind noise it suffers at high speed, with the sides being particularly problematic.

Looks & Equipment

This new Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-DESIGN has a number of design features that set it apart from other S60s. It has a new rear diffuser as well as changes to the grille and the bumpers. It has been lowered and has larger 18 inch wheels along with twin exhausts.

The interiors of Volvos have always been a major selling point, and the S60 T6 AWD continues this proud tradition. The driver’s seat is high and well situated and the dashboard is well laid out and easy to get used to. The seats are especially well designed being both supportive and comfortable, making even long distance motorway travel tolerable.

The S60 T6 AWD has an impressive array of features as standard; some of these include alloy wheels, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, climate control. Some optional extras are also available such as pedestrian detection, blind spot information system, satnav, and leather seats.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Volvo S60 T6 AWD scored the maximum available five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests, which is to be expected from a car of this quality, price and size. There are a number of safety features as standard; including anti whiplash control, side impact protection, and traction control. Volvo also offers a Blind Spot Information System that alerts the driver to nearby cars, however this is a cost option.

The S60 T6 AWD has plenty of cabin space for four adults with plenty of leg and head room, although fitting another passenger in the central rear position may be a little difficult. The boot is large with a capacity of 339 litres; however this is smaller than some of its rivals such as the BMW 530i SE which has a boot space of 560 litres.

The warranty offered by Volvo is good but not the most generous on offer. The three year 60,000 miles coverage is not as extensive as those offered by companies such as Toyota, which offers a 100,000 mile five year warranty.

Value for Money

The Volvo S60 T6 AWD is not significantly cheaper than many of its higher reputation rivals, with a start price of £35,410 and the Volvo may struggle in this price bracket against the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The carbon emissions of the Volvo also put it in a higher road tax bracket than its rivals. With 231g/km the Volvo is in road tax bracket L, whereas the The BMW 530i SE is in road tax bracket H, making it a little cheaper.
