The Volkswagen Sharan S 1.4 TSI 5dr could be for you if you are looking for a large family car that has bags of room but respectably low running costs. This large people carrier can seat up to seven adults in its comfortable yet practical cabin, has an attractively styled exterior and feels of high quality. It’s a decently refined drive and considering its size, is a reasonable performer too.

PROS:  The cabin is classy and of a high quality. The dash is clean, uncluttered and intuitive. The turbocharged engine has just enough power. It has a versatile seating layout and can be converted into a very large load area.

CONS:  It’s not particularly cheap or exciting and equipment levels are low. The third row of seats is a bit difficult to fold flat.

Behind the Wheel

The 1.4 litre four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces maximum figures of 148 bhp at 5800 rpm and 177 lb-ft at 1750-4000 rpm, which doesn’t sound much in a MPV of this size but because maximum torque is available so low in the rev range it feels surprisingly nippy. A 0-62 mph time of 10.7 seconds and a top speed of 122 mph are good considering the size and weight of the vehicle.

The driver’s seat has height adjustment and the steering can be adjusted so most drivers should be able to find a decent position. The dashboard is well laid out, has straight forward instruments and overall it good to the touch, being made of high quality materials. Forward visibility is good through the wide screen, but the little side quarter lights can obstruct your view driving around corners.

This Volkswagen Sharan’s ride is smooth and nicely refined when cruising on motorways with only a minimum of wind noise from the door mirrors. Body roll is kept reasonably well in check while the steering is sharp, too.

Looks & Equipment

The Volkswagen Sharan S 1.4 TSI 5dr is a smart and stylish people carrier but still fairly bulky. Inside, you get climate control, electric windows front and rear, electric door mirrors, MP3 connectivity and a CD as standard. It also comes with remote central locking and immobiliser and alarm.

Among the available options are metallic paint at £495, Satnav for £725, rear parking sensors at £440, Bluetooth at £420, alloy wheels for £460 and cruise control for £195.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

This Volkswagen Sharan comes with a five star Euro NCAP rating and many other safety features including seven airbags, ABS, Isofix child seat mountings and stability control.

There is enough space in the cabin for seven adults to travel comfortably. Boot space is reasonable with all seats in use – 375 litres – but with all seats folded flat (the third row being a bit fussy) the loading capacity rises to a spacious 2297 litres. There are numerous compartments around the cabin for handy stowage of smaller items as well. The sliding rear doors offer excellent access to the rear seats as well as being very useful in tighter spaces.

Volkswagens have above average reliability, but for additional peace of mind this car comes with a three year 60,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

At £24,010, the Volkswagen Sharan S 1.4 TSI 5dr is a competitively priced and very practical family car. It has a spacious, comfortable cabin for up to seven passengers and with the seats folded it has a cavernous luggage space. It has a fairly fast yet frugal engine, which will keep running costs low. It feels sturdy and well made, but it’s not the most appealing people carrier out there.

A combined cycle of 39.2 mpg helped in part by a Stop/Start feature is a good figure for a large family car and with a CO2 emissions figure of 167 g/km, the taxes and running costs won’t be too expensive.
