The Vauxhall Insignia Elite 2.0 CDTi (160ps) Auto 5dr is stylish, powerful and very economical. However, at just under 30 grand, it is very pricey for an Insignia and most buyers will be tempted by models from BMW and Audi at this price.

PROS:  Good performance, good fuel economy, handsome exterior

CONS:  Not as roomy as a Mondeo, limited rear visibility

Behind the Wheel

The Vauxhall Insignia Elite 2.0 CDTi (160ps) Auto 5dr produces 158 bhp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This means 0-60mph in an impressive 9.0 seconds and a top speed of 134mph. Although this performance is hardly earth-shattering, it is more than enough for a car like the Insignia.

The Insignia handles admirably with responsive steering a good body control. It's hardly a thrilling drive but it's much nicer than the godawful old Vectra and means that Vauxhall finally have a strong contender in the family car market. The ride is also very comfortable, even over rough surfaces.

Looks & Equipment

Vauxhall is undergoing a bit of a style renaissance at the moment and all of ts current lineup are attractive cars. The Insignia looks very classy and also comes with a stylish interior.

In terms of in-car technology, this model comes with a number of basic essentials as standard, including: power steering, central locking, stability control, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity. Alloy wheels are also a standard feature.

Rear parking sensors also become a standard feature in this trim level – as do leather seats. Bluetooth connectivity and a built-in sat nav are still only available for an additional fee, costing £220 and £855 respectively.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There is plenty of space in the cabin although taller rear seat passengers may have to bend their necks to fit thanks to the Insignia's sloping roofline. The boot is also big, offering 530-litres of space with the rear seats up and an impressive 1470-litres with the seats folded down.

The Insignia should be reliable and is offered with an impressive 100,000 mile warranty for further reassurance.

The Insignia scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests thanks to an impressive array of safety features.

Value for Money

Priced at £29,135, this model is one of the more expensive models in the range. Fuel economy is pretty good at 49.6mpg combined and CO2 emissions of 149g/km put the car into a reasonably low tax band: F.

Insurance premiums will also be moderate, under insurance group 22 but the high purchase price may put some buyers off, despite the good level of equipment that comes as standard.
