The Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.2 D-4D AWD 5dr is a mid-range model in the RAV4 – short for Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive – range, which was first introduced by the Japanese car maker back in 1994. The RAV4 is now into its fourth generation, and while it largely enjoyed the emerging crossover 4x4 market to itself, it now faces strong competition from rival manufacturers. The Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.2 D-4D AWD 5dr will undoubtedly be a strong contender for buyers looking at that sector of the market, but does it stand out against it competitors? If it doesn’t, it certainly isn’t for lack of trying on Toyota’s part, as the new model looks very different from its predecessor.

PROS:  Comfortable and roomy. Distinctive new styling.

CONS:  Average to drive. Body roll issues when cornering.

Behind the Wheel

The Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.2 D-4D AWD 5dr is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine, which has 147bhp and produces 251lb-ft of torque at 2000-2800 rpm. This 16-valve engine, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, helps the RAV4 from 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds, and all the way up to a top speed of 118mph.

The driving position in the RAV4 and the dash and controls are well thought out, although lack the premium feel to their construction compared to other rivals. The responsive steering and elevated vantage point aid manouverability in tighter spots, but does contribute to an average ride and body roll issues when driven enthusiastically.

Looks & Equipment

The RAV4 comes as standard with power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front and rear windows, cruise control, alarm and immobiliser, CD player with Bluetooth and MP3 connectivity.

There is a lengthy list of optional extras for those who want to spec up the model, including electric sunroof for £500, metallic paint for £495, rear parking sensors for £600, leather seats at £1,250, and satellite navigation for £750, although of course selecting all these would raise the on-the-road price considerably. The Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.2 D-4D AWD 5dr is certainly more distinctive than the anonymous-looking third-generation model, and although the sharp and pointy angles of the new model wont be to everybody’s taste Toyota have certainly succeeded in making the model more distinctive.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The RAV4 comes as standard with driver, passenger, and front side airbags, and boasts top marks from Euro NCAP, the independent consumer organisation who conduct safety test on all new cars released onto the European market and who awarded the fourth-generation RAV4 a 5-Star overall rating.

The Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.2 D-4D AWD 5dr comes with an impressive 5-year,100,000-mile warranty as standard.

The RAV4 fares well for practicality when it comes to rear seat space, with the flat floor allowing ample leg room for rear passengers, while the improved top-hinged tailgate and 410-litre boot capacity are also a welcome sight, as is the standard issue of split-folding rear seats.

Value for Money

The Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.2 D-4D AWD 5dr has a price tag of £26,495, putting it around the middle of the £22,595 to £29,295 RAV4 range. The Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.2 D-4D AWD 5dr has a combined fuel economy figure of 49.6mpg. The 2.0-litre diesel-powered front-wheel drive only Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.0 D-4D 2WD model has a better figure of 57.6mpg combined, and is just over £2,000 less to buy, so it is worth asking yourself how important 4-wheel drive is before making a purchase.

The Toyota RAV4 Icon 2.2 D-4D AWD 5dr produced 149g/km of CO2 resulting in it falling into Road Tax Band F, and is in insurance group 29.
