The Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i Ice 3dr is well equipped, well made and cheap. It's build to a budget but makes an excellent car for townies thanks to its low running costs and nippy handling.

PROS:  Cheap, practical, well made and good looking, there's not much to dislike about the Aygo.

CONS:  The three cylinder engine drones a bit and the boot is very small indeed.

Behind the Wheel

The Aygo is fitted with a 1.0 litre engine which produces 67bhp and 68 lb-ft of torque. 0-62 mph takes 14.2 seconds and you'll be flat out at 98mph. However, because the Aygo is so small, it never feels slow. In fact it's great fun to drive thanks to precise steering. The short wheelbase means that the ride is a little uncomposed and the narrow tyres don't offer much grip. However, this is all part of the car's charm.

The three cylinder engine is fine about town but if you take the Aygo onto a motorway, it's going to irritate you very quickly.

Looks & Equipment

The Aygo looks great and is easily better looking than its sister cars, the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1. The interior is very basic but feels well screwed together, however there are some cheap plastics in the cabin.

In terms of standard kit, you get air-con, electric front windows, metallic paint, alcantra seats, Bluetooth and a CD player with MP3 connectivity. Rear parking sensors will set you back an extra £335 - but are quite unnecessary in a car as small as this - and alloy wheels will cost you £608.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The cabin is capable of seating four people as long as they aren’t too tall. The boot is quite small and access through the small glass tailgate is a bit of a nuisance. The split/folding rear seats can be lowered to increase the space from 139 litres to a healthy 751 litres should the need arise and there are useful storage compartments around the cabin.

Toyota has a good reputation for reliability and the car comes with an excellent five year 100,000 mile warranty.

The Aygo comes with driver, passenger and side airbags, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and ISOFIX child-seat mountings. Stability control is a £357 option.

Value for Money

At £9,855, the Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i Plus 3dr is one of the most affordable cars in its class and comes with a decent level of standard kit for the price. The Aygo returns 61.4mpg on the combined cycle which is very impressive and and you'll only be paying Mr Osborne £20 a year thanks to group B road tax. All in all, the Aygo represents superb value for money.
