The Toyota Avensis Tourer TR 1.8 V-matic M-drive S is a good all-rounder, offering loads of interior space and a comfortable driving experience. It's not going to set the world alight with its performance but it's a credible alternative to the Mondeo Estate and Insignia Tourer.

PROS:  The Avensis Tourer TR 1.8 V-matic is easy to drive, practical, well equipped and reliable.

CONS:  It's dull to look at and dull to drive and the 1.8-litre petrol engine is underpowered.

Behind the Wheel

The Avensis Tourer TR 1.8 V-matic M-driveS is fitted with a 1.8-litre petrol engine which produces 145bhp and 133lb-ft of torque. This means 0-62mph takes 10.7 seconds and flat out you'll be going 124mph. Although these figures sound adequate, the Avensis makes a meal out of it and the engine needs to be worked hard to give its best.

In terms of handling, the Avensis falls short of the competition and there is loads of body roll through the corners and very little in the way of feedback through the steering wheel. It's fine on the motorway but on B-roads it soon becomes dull.

Looks & Equipment

The Avensis is very dull, both inside and out. However, the interior feels very well made and there is general feeling of quality in the cabin.

Standard equipment includes power steering, central locking, stability control, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, CD player and MP3 connectivity and a built-in sat nav.

Rear parking sensors are priced at £511 whilst metallic paint costs an additional £450.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

There's plenty of interior space in the Avensis Tourer with loads of head and legroom in both the front and the rear seats. The boot is also very impressive with 543-litres on offer with the rear seats up and 1609-litres available with the rear seats down.

The Avensis scored the full five stars in the Euro NCAP tests and is fitted with an impressive amount of safety equipment including front, side and curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag.

Reliability should not be an issue as Toyota's reputation for building well-made cars is legendary and the Avensis is offered with a five year/100,000 mile warranty.

Value for Money

At £22,600 the Toyota Avensis Tourer is relatively good value for money given the amount of equipment which is included as standard.

Running costs are fairly reasonable for a car of this class too, with road tax falling under band G due to carbon emissions of 158g/km. Decent fuel economy of 41.5 mpg means that refuelling shouldn’t be expensive or frequent either. The Avensis should also hold its value well.
