For those looking for a car which delivers a good combination of performance, practicality and efficiency the Skoda Fabia Estate Elegance 1.6 TDI CR 105ps is a great option. The engine delivers a decent amount of power to give the car high performance credentials and high fuel efficiency combines with an environmentally friendly engine to make this a great option for car buyers.

PROS:  Good green credentials and a fair amount of power make this model a great all-round performer.

CONS:  Certain essential features such as stability control are only available for an additional cost and this could deter buyers.

Behind the Wheel

A four cylinder engine delivers a healthy power output of 104 bhp (105 ps) at 5000 rpm with torque figures of 184 lb-ft at 1500-2500 rpm. This gives the car a decent top speed of 118 mph and acceleration is adequate, with the car taking 11.0 seconds to travel from 0-62 mph.

The engine’s efficiency isn’t bad considering its size and class and is capable of achieving 67.3 mpg on a combined cycle. Carbon emissions are also really low, registering just over the 100 g/km threshold at 109 g/km, placing the car into road tax band B.

The steering of the car is firm and stable, but unfortunately the car’s height puts it at a disadvantage and there is a lot of body roll around corners and bends.

Looks & Equipment

The Fabia looks a little clumsy from the outside due to the large front end, so it is not the most attractive car on the market. In the interior, the car comes with a decent selection of basic equipment as standard, but some luxuries are either unavailable or cost extra.

Standard equipment includes power steering, central locking, alloy wheels, climate control, electric door mirrors, electric front windows, cruise control and an advanced stereo system with both CD and MP3 connectivity.

For an extra £235 Bluetooth connectivity can be added, whilst rear parking sensors and a metallic paint finish are priced at £280 and £440 respectively. A built-in sat nav can be added for £525 with a part leather interior available for an additional £600. Stability control, a feature offered as standard on other models, is only available for an additional £365.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

As a family car, practicality will be a priority and the Fabia offers plenty of cabin space for passengers due to the long shape of the car. There is also plenty of adjustment within the steering wheel and seats to allow drivers and passengers find the most comfortable seating position.

On top of this, the boot capacity of the car is fairly reasonable for a family car and there is 505 litres of space on offer when all of the seats are in place. Collapsing these down expands this capacity to an impressive 1,485 litres which makes it ideal family car material.

The build of the Fabia Estate is great quality and the reliability is good. The fit and finish of internal instruments is good and the materials feel and look solid without looking cheap.

In terms of safety, the car comes with driver, passenger and front side air bags all fitted as standard features. To protect the car from theft there is an immobiliser fitted as standard alongside an alarm.

Value for Money

Priced at £15,535 this car is very reasonable considering the efficiency which is offered. The fuel consumption of 67.3 mpg means that refuelling will be infrequent, meaning high financial savings. In addition, carbon emissions are very low at 109 g/km, putting road tax costs at a more than manageable rate in road tax band B.

On top of this, strong resale values for the car mean that the Fabia Estate is a wise investment. For those who want a combination of performance and efficiency, this model is the perfect compromise.
