The Renault Laguna continues to improve to compete with the best in the large hatchback market. It delivers a comfortable ride and makes for an excellent family vehicle. The interior is well-built. Although the diesel engine is more cost-efficient, this version offers better performance.

PROS:  The Renault Laguna Expression 2.0 16v 140 boasts decent trim quality and finish. The engine is refined and offers a fine ride.

CONS:  Though the Laguna offers a fine ride, it can be a bit unsettled on bumps or uneven surfaces. Though the interior is generally comfortable, there is limited legroom, and the models looks are quite dull and unimaginative. Poor residual values.

Behind the Wheel

The Renault Laguna is a great cruiser that is easy to drive. Its steering is so light and vague that it’s actually hard to tell if it’s attached to the front wheels or not. However, this car is quite agile and road grip is acceptable. The suspension is quite supple and offers a soft ride meaning this vehicle is actually a fine choice for long trips on the motorway - although it does tend to make noise when absorbing bumps. The engine is smooth and refined. Visibility is good.

The Renault Laguna Expression has a 1997cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine that produces 140bhp at 6000 rpm and delivers a torque of 144lb-ft at 1750 rpm. It has the capability to reach 62 mph in 9.1 seconds and a top speed of 131 mph. Its combined mpg of 37.7 is within range for the class, but far from the most frugal.

Looks & Equipment

The looks of the Renault Laguna is handsome for some, and dull an unambitious to others.

Though this version is an “improved” one, Renault should have benchmarked the modifications against rivals such as the VW Passat and Ford Mondeo. This version comes with a manual 6-speed with no option for an automatic gearbox.

The Laguna Expression comes equipped with four electric windows, alloy wheels, air conditioning, electronic stability program, split/fold rear seats, CD player and power steering. Available cost options for this version are sat nav, cruise-control, reversing sensor, climate control and metallic paint. The interior is well-built and very comfortable.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

Renault Laguna offers fold-flat seats and the boot opening is quite wide. The boot itself is sufficient at 462 litres when the seats are up. Fold down the rear seats and boot space expands to 1,377 litres. However, the Ford Mondeo and Mazda 6 offer bigger boot space. There’s ample space in the front seats but the rear seats could be a tad cramped. The Laguna also has an inclined roof-line that can affect headroom at the rear for taller passengers.

Safety is a strong point of the Laguna Expression 2.0. It has a 5-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests which means that this car is adequate with its standard safety features such as stability control and air bags. Rear side bags and tyre-pressure monitor are options.

Build quality is great as its cabin is one of the best, if not the best, that Renault Laguna has made.

Value for Money

The Renault Laguna Expression 2.0 16v 140 5dr is priced at £18,215 which is cheap enough for a large petrol family hatchback.

It has an mpg of 37.7, a CO2 emission rating of 173g/km, falls under insurance group 25 and Road Tax Band H. These are indications that this version is not exactly cheap to run. In comparison, the 1.5 dCi diesel engine gives a return of 57.6 mpg. Petrol engines, aside from high running costs, can have a poor resale value.
