PROS: The Cayenne delivers impressive performance figures, handles brilliantly and is very luxurious.
CONS: It is absolutely hideous and ludicrously expensive to buy and run.
The Cayenne's 3.6-litre V6 develops 296bhp and 295lb-ft of torque. This makes for a 0-62mph time of 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. The sensible money, however, will go on the diesel model which manages to be two tenths quicker to 62mph and more economical.
The Cayenne handles very well indeed and it feels more agile than a 4x4 has any right to. The steering is a bit numb and lifeless and the ride is very harsh, especially at low speed.
Overall the Cayenne is relatively quiet although some wind noise is evident at motorway speeds.
We know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but, no argument please, the Cayenne is absolutely hideous and looks like a fat 911 on stilts. Not good.
On the other hand, the interior is superb and offers luxury and peerless quality.
Standard equipment includes climate control, electric windows, cruise control, part leather seats and a CD player. Sat-Nav will set you back £2137, Bluetooth costs £445, MP3 connectivity is priced at £77 and rear parking sensors add another £1044 to the bill. A this price, it is disappointing that Porsche haven't included a bit more standard kit.
The Cayenne offers plenty of space for five passengers although it is disappointing that Porsche don't offer a seven seat version. There's a lot of luggage space - 670-litres with the rear seats up and 1780-litres with the rear seats down.
The Cayenne hasn't been tested by Euro NCAP but should be very safe thanks to its sheer size and the number of airbags included as standard.
The Cayenne should also be very reliable - Porsches always are - and comes with a 3 year/unlimited mileage warranty.
At £44,786, the Cayenne is very expensive for what it is. You don't even get a lot of standard equipment for the money and you're paying for the badge.
It will also be expensive to run, only managing a combined 28.5mpg, and CO2 emissions of 236g/km mean it falls under the second highest tax band, L.
