The Peugeot 508 SW GT 2.2 HDi FAP 5dr is an excellent car and one of the best estates around for this sort of money. However £30k is a lot of money to pay for car with a Peugeot badge and for this sort of money the Peugeot struggles to compete with the German competition.

PROS:  The 508 SW looks great and is good to drive. It should also be very safe and has a tastefully appointed interior.

CONS:  For this sort of money you can get a decent mid-range 3 Series Touring or Audi A4 Avant.

Behind the Wheel

The Peugeot 508 SW GT 2.2 HDi FAP 5dr's 2.0-litre diesel engine develops 204bhp and 332 lb-ft of torque. This allows it to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 8.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 138 mph. This is the fastest 508 SW in the range and the performance figures are excellent for a family estate car.

The 508 SW is a very relaxing car to drive and there is very little wind or road noise, except at high speeds. The car handles well too with plenty of grip and minimal body roll through the bends. The ride is a little uncomfortable, especially over rough roads but overall the 508 SW is a very nice car to drive.

Looks & Equipment

The GT 2.2 HDi is the top-of-the-range 508 SW and therefore comes with a comprehensive list of standard equipment. Alloy wheels, climate control, electric mirrors and windows, cruise control, parking sensors, leather seats, Bluetooth, Sat-Nav and a CD player with MP3 connectivity all come as standard.

Metallic paint is a £450 option.

The 508 SW is a handsome car too thanks to its clean, smart lines and attractive profile. The interior is class-leading thanks to good quality interior plastics and a general feeling of quality throughout.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The 508 was awarded the full five star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests last year and should be a very safe car indeed thanks to driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags which are all included as standard. Stability control is also fitted to help you avoid crashing in the first place.

Peugeot don't have the best reputation for reliability but the 508 SW feels robust. It comes as standard with a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty.

There is plenty of space in the 508 SW although taller rear passengers may find that legroom is at a premium. There's a decent 512-litres of boot space on offer with the rear seats up and 1598-litres available with the seats folded down.

Value for Money

The 508 SW GT 2.2 HDi FAP 5dr is the priciest 508 in the range and, although it is fitted with a good amount of standard equipment, it is priced to compete with the 3 Series Touring and A4 Avant and that's a battle that the 508 can't really win.

Running costs will be reasonable and the 508 SW falls under VED band G thanks to CO2 emissions of 154g/km. The fuel economy is also impressive at a combined 47.8mpg.
