Mercedes-Benz S Class Overview

The S-Class was built to transport its passengers in style, but will not accommodate large amounts of luggage. The car delivers an incredibly comfortable ride, especially for front seat passengers, and provides easy accessibility.

The S-Class controls and displays are easy to use and logically located. The driver shouldn’t have any problem at all finding the controls. For the most part they are all where you would expect to find them. As standard the Mercedes S-Class comes with Mercedes COMAND system. It includes a radio/CD/DVD drive in the centre console and DVD navigation in the luggage compartment.

A wide range of engines are available, petrol and diesel. The S-Class delivers a superb driving experience with excellent handling, and can top out at over 150mph.

Background

The Mercedes S-Class first originated in 1954 with the Ponton, which was powered by a 2.2 litre engine.

This was succeeded by the Fintail in 1959 and later the W108 in 1965. These models were both available with a wider range of engines and featured restyled exteriors.

It was not until 1972 that Mercedes officially called the W116 the S-Class. This model was equipped with a four-wheel independent suspension and disc brakes, as well as new safety features. It was available with a range of engines, including a 3 litre turbodiesel, and its production continued up until 1979.

The W126, which debuted in 1979, was again equipped with a wider range of engines than its predecessor as well as a host of new safety features. The cabin was also more luxurious, with heated seats and a more advanced climate control system.

The next generation, the W140, was released in 1991. This model sported a new range of engines and many more technological innovations, including electric windows. The W140 was given a facelift in 1995.

1999 saw the introduction of the W220. Once again Mercedes released the model with an upgraded engine range and a host of new technology, including a navigation system built in to the centre console.

The current generation S-Class, the W221, has been in production since 2006. The latest model features a 7-speed transmission, as well as state of the art technology and a more luxurious cabin.

Summary

The Mercedes S-Class is a luxury saloon that is all about comfort and style. This is not a car for the young driver or for families, but will deliver a driving experience with unrivalled class and quality.
