In 2008, the Mazda2 won the World Car of the Year award. Now, with several improvements over the old model, the new model is even better. This sporty supermini is both engaging and fun to drive. It is also competitively priced and cost efficient.

PROS:  The styling of the Mazda 2 1.3 Tamura 5dr is sharp and has a sporty feel to it. It also has decent handling and has a very smooth and enjoyable drive. It has a good array of standard equipment.

CONS:  The Mazda 2 could be more refined. The ride can also be bumpy at times as suspension is quite stiff. There is no USB input available and the rear door openings are small. Boot space is not as large as other cars in the same class.

Behind the Wheel

The Mazda2 Tamura special edition features a 1.3-litre petrol engine which has a power output of 82 bhp at 6000rpm. With this power, the Mazda2 can reach 0-62mph in 13.2 seconds and can hit a top speed of 106mph. The Mazda2 Tamura develops 90lb-ft of torque at 3500rpm. It has a five-speed gearbox.

The Mazda 2 doesn’t roll much and it handles corners well. Its steering is very responsive and allows the model to glide through bends easily. This makes the Mazda 1.3 best for town driving for its manoeuvrability around city roads is impressive. All around visibility for the Mazda2 is decent, as its driving position is good.

Looks & Equipment

The Mazda2 1.3 Tamura 5-door hatchback’s design is based on the TS2 model. Its sporty look is completed with the addition of front and rear bumpers, 2-bar sports grille, rear spoiler and side skirts. These accessories are part of the Sports Styling Pack which was given to the Mazda2. In addition to this, the Mazda2 Tamura has 16 inch dark grey alloy wheels and halogen headlights. There are four colours which you can choose from which can either be metallic or pearlescent. You have a choice between Aluminium Metallic, Radiant Ebony Mica, Aurora Blue Mica or Cyrstal White Pearlescent.

The Mazda2 Tamura’s equipment includes the following: silver bezels on the steering wheel, air conditioning, electric front windows, adjustable driver’s seat height, multi-function glovebox with magazine rack, remote central locking with deadlocks, 60/40 split rear seats. For entertainment, the Mazda2 has a CD radio with auxiliary input jack and four speakers. Audio controls are mounted on the steering wheel for driver convenience. To free up space in front, the gear lever of the Mazda2 is mounted on the dash.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

The Mazda2 has a reasonable amount of space for the driver and passengers and the boot capacity is adequate. The boot can hold up to 250 litres with the seats in place. Fold the seats and the boot space expands to 787 litres. The cabin is big enough to seat four people comfortably although climbing up the back of the Mazda2 can be a challenge for big people as the openings are a bit small.

The Mazda2 is equipped with Anti-lock Brake System with Emergency Brake Assist and Electronic Brake-force distribution, Thatcham Category 1 alarm and immobiliser to help the driver maintain control of the Mazda2 in case of any untoward incident. Front airbags for the driver and front passenger and side and curtain airbags plus seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load-limiters are also installed to ensure the safety of the passengers in case of collisions. For this, the Mazda2 has a five star rating from NCAP for adult occupant protection and a four star rating for child protection.

To keep your mind at ease, Mazda2 has a warranty that covers three years up to 60,000 miles.

Value for Money

A brand new Mazda2 Tamura costs £11,830 and it has a high resale value. It is a frugal car with a low road tax band (C) due to its CO2 emissions of 119g/km. This means that owners will have to shell out just £30.00 annually for road tax. In addition to this, the Mazda2 has a combined fuel economy of 55.4 mpg and sits in insurance group 11. With competitive pricing and low running costs, the Mazda2 is really one to consider when thinking about buying a supermini. It is a car that performs well and looks stylish.
