The GranTurismo is a car which is designed to carry four people in comfort, and even in this entry level model the luxury in the cabin is superb, and the amount of space available is really very good. The engine doesn't really come to life until you start giving it some throttle, but above 3000rpm it is really something, and whilst it is a practical and refined cruiser, the fun really starts when you put your foot down.

PROS:  The entry level model of the GranTurismo has a wide range of equipment in a package that is wonderful to drive and really does come into its own when you work the engine to produce some impressive performance.

CONS:  There is a lack of power at lower revs which is a bit of a shame, but it does suffer from poor visibility and the size of the boot is a little bit small.

Behind the Wheel

There is no disputing the fact that the GranTurismo is a big car, but this isn't necessarily a problem for the most part as it handles very well with accurate steering that is well weighted, but there isn't too much feedback. There is plenty of grip while cornering, but the ride is a little firm at lower speeds, but not to the point where it gets uncomfortable. The driving seat and the steering wheel can both be fully adjusted to suit the driver, but one disappointing aspect is that the thick window pillars do impact on the visibility to the side, especially at junctions.

The engine performance from the 4.2 litre V8 isn't as good as the MC Stradale model, but is still more than enough for most people, sending the car from 0-62mph in only 5.2 seconds. The top speed of 177mph is also more than most people will ever get to use without taking the car to the track. The GranTurismo is also very refined on the whole, with the pleasant engine note becoming audible when you work the engine.

Looks & Equipment

The Maserati is a beautiful and distinctive car that will really stand out because of the small production numbers, and the distinctive grille with vertical chrome bars really is lovely. The lines are clean and the headlight clusters are streamlined into the curves of the car, while the back end is also attractive with two sets of twin exhausts. Inside the cabin is classy and comfortable, with the only quibble being the small fussy controls that are to be found on the centre console.

The level of equipment included with the GranTurismo is wonderful, with cruise control making it very good on longer journeys and climate control to keep everything comfortable. Alloy wheels and power leather seats are also classy features, while the inclusion of satellite navigation and a CD stereo system with a hard drive are very welcome in an entry level model.

Practicality, Safety & Reliability

One of the attractive features of the GranTurismo is that it does have practical back seats that can actually be used by adults, but the trade off for this is that the boot is really rather small. Maserati have also struggled historically in terms of the reliability of their cars, but they have promised that their most recent models are simpler and are less likely to break down.

The GranTurismo also boasts a number of very good safety features, with the electronic driving aids such as stability control and traction control doing a very good job of ensuring the driver remains fully in control. There are also a number of airbags to look after the occupants should the car become involved in a collision.

Value for Money

With a list price of £82,190 it is fair to say that this version of the GranTurismo isn't a cheap car to buy, but it is fairly typical of the luxury bespoke brands such as Maserati. This model is also significantly cheaper than the ultra-light MC Stradale which is at the top of the GranTurismo range.

Running costs for the car are pretty hefty, with the 4.2 litre engine delivering fuel efficiency figures of an average 19.8mpg, which is only slightly more than the larger engine in the range. Insurance costs for the car are also going to be significant, but it is worth noting that the resale values for Maserati are very good indeed. The car comes with a three year warranty and roadside breakdown assistance.
